PCOS Demystified: An Ayurvedic Approach to Hormonal Balance

Article - Min Read
PCOS, an intricate endocrinal and metabolic disorder, disrupts the delicate balance of a woman's menstrual cycle, hormones, fertility, insulin production, circulatory system, and overall appearance. With a prevalence of 5-10% among pre-menopausal women, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome stands as a significant contributor to sub-fertility.

It manifests through anovulation (lack of egg release), excess androgen levels (elevated male sexual hormones like testosterone), obesity, and sub-fertility. The condition leads to heightened levels of free testosterone, ovarian androgen secretion, free estradiol, and estrone, giving rise to a range of physical and emotional challenges.

Statistically, it is noteworthy that:
  • Two in every 10 women in India have PCOS, according to a study by PCOS Society.
  • Out of every 10 women diagnosed with PCOS, six are teenagers.
  • 60% of women with PCOS are obese.
  • 35-50% of the women have a fatty liver.
  • About 70% of women have insulin resistance, 60-70% have high level of androgen and 40-60% have glucose intolerance.

Ayurvedic Understanding of PCOS

According to Ayurveda, PCOS involves the interplay of Dosha (functional entities of the body), Dhatu (major structural entities), and Upa-dhatu (sub-tissues). Rather than attributing the condition to a single disease or syndrome, Ayurveda recognizes its symptoms as resembling various terminologies such as Anartava (amenorrhea), Yonivyapad (anatomical and physiological disorders of the reproductive system), Arjaska (oligomenorrhea caused by imbalanced Vata Dosha), Rajodushti, and Ashtartava Dushti (menstrual flow disorders caused by Dosha vitiation).

Hence, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can be understood in Ayurvedic terms with the involvement of Dosha, Dhatu, and Upadhatu.

  • Kapha predominance manifests as increased weight, subfertility, hirsutism, diabetic tendencies and coldness.
  • Pitta predominance manifests as hair loss, acne, painful menses, clots and heart problems.
  • Vata predominance manifests with painful menses, scanty or less menstrual blood and severe menstrual irregularity

Ananda's Approach Towards PCOS

Ayurveda employs the principles of Shodhana (detoxification) and Shamana (rejuvenation) to restore hormonal balance and harmonize the internal environment. These methods aim to address imbalances and eliminate impurities through detoxification, followed by rejuvenation techniques to optimize the body's physiology and prepare women for the subsequent phase. By integrating these approaches as part of our PCOS Management programme, Ananda seeks to promote overall well-being and maintain a healthy equilibrium.

Abhyanga, a traditional Ayurvedic practice, holds significant benefits for individuals with PCOD, PCOS, and hypothyroidism. By regulating the flow of vata dosha and controlling pitta aggravation, abhyanga contributes to the gradual restoration of hormonal balance. This gentle yet powerful therapy supports the body's natural healing process, aiding individuals in their journey towards wellness and harmony.

Treatment Protocol

The Ayurvedic Approach

At Ananda, our physicians utilize the Ayurvedic approach to restore balance within the body and address the underlying imbalances that contribute to the symptoms mentioned above. The duration of recovery may vary from person to person, typically ranging from 3 to 8 months, depending on the specific hormonal and tissue imbalances present. Through personalized treatments and guidance, we strive to support individuals on their path to holistic healing and well-being.
The primary approach to treating PCOS at Ananda involves nidana parivarjana, which focuses on avoiding the causative factors. This is followed by a series of detoxification therapies, including Panchakarma, which consists of Vasti (therapeutic enemas) and Virechana (laxative therapies), along with rejuvenating shamana therapies such as Abhyanga, Marma abhyanga, and koshta abhyanga (therapeutic abdominal massage).

Customized Ayurvedic medicines, nourishing supplements, and rejuvenating therapies are then prescribed to restore balance to the body. Additionally, addressing gut-related issues is important in the treatment of PCOS to enhance metabolism and improve digestion. Our comprehensive approach aims to promote overall well-being and support individuals on their healing journey.

Personalized Plans

Upon completion of the sessions at Ananda, a personalized home plan will be provided, including dietary guidelines, exercise recommendations, and a supplement list. To ensure ongoing progress and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment, monthly online consultations will be conducted. It is important to note that the progress and recovery journey may vary for each individual, as the treatment is tailored to meet their specific needs and circumstances.

Cuisine According to Individual Needs

A vital aspect of the treatment and maintenance process involves tailored meal plans. These plans focus on reducing the intake of simple carbohydrates, dairy, processed foods, simple sugars, caffeine, and addictive substances. Instead, they emphasize the inclusion of nutrient-rich foods such as millets, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, fruits with low glycemic index, essential fatty acids, and regular hydration. Additionally, the use of herbs and herbal drinks is recommended to aid in detoxification and facilitate faster healing.

Bringing It All Together With Yoga & Meditation

In addition to the comprehensive approach, customized yogic postures and meditative practices are incorporated to specifically target the female reproductive system. Asanas such as Bhujangasana, Vajrasana, and Dhanurasana are utilized to strengthen the abdominal region, improve blood flow, and alleviate stress. These physical asanas also aid in the movement of toxins and enhance the functioning of the lymphatic system, facilitating their eventual elimination from the body.

Meditative practices and breathwork techniques are employed to reduce stress, which is often associated with PCOS. Addressing emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem is considered a crucial component of the treatment plan.
