  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups warm water

Preparation:

  1. Rinse mung dal and rice until the water runs clear.
  2. Heat ghee in a pot. Add cumin seeds, hing, turmeric, and coriander. Sauté for 30 seconds.
  3. Add rice, dal, vegetables, and salt. Stir well.
  4. Add water. Bring to boil, then simmer for 30–40 minutes until soft and porridge-like.
  5. Serve warm with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro or lemon juice.

Preparation:
  • Heat ghee or coconut oil in a deep pot over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and ginger. Sauté for 30 seconds until aromatic.
  • Stir in turmeric, coriander powder, carrots, and tomatoes. Cook for 2–3 minutes until softened.
  • Add the rinsed masoor dal and water. Stir well.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes until lentils are tender.
  • Season with salt and black pepper.
  • Blend partially for a smooth consistency, or leave it chunky as preferred.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander, curry leaves, or a dash of lime juice.

Ayurvedic Perspective:
  • Masoor dal is light and astringent, making it ideal for Kapha and Pitta doshas when used appropriately.
  • Cumin, ginger, and turmeric are digestive herbs that reduce Ama (toxins) and support Agni (digestive fire).
