Women's Health - healing traditions of the East

Nestled in a quiet corner of Ananda’s 100-acre estate at the Himalayan foothills is a prayer room that was once home to Ma Anandamayi, an Indian saint and yoga guru. Swami Sivananda Saraswatidescribed her as the most perfect flower the Indian soil has produced’. With Ma’s temple overlooking the happenings at Ananda, the consciousness of this wellness retreat reverberates with shakti, the embodiment of feminine energy that heals all.

Ancient eastern traditions at the core of Ananda’s healing approach begin the enquiry by understanding the ‘seed’ or core constitution. Known differently across the healing paths, its Prakruti in Ayurveda, where physicians discover dominating biological forces which are further sub categorised as vata, pitta and kapha. Similar is the play of Yin & Yang recognised by Traditional Chinese Medicine experts. Discovering the dominance and imbalance of Ha & Tha is work of the experienced yogis, while Ananda’s spiritual phycologists lift the traumas hidden in the subconscious to one’s conscious awareness for the healing process to move up rapidly.

At the onset of youth, the environmental pressures and elemental toxins enter the system through food, air, cultural influences and thought exchange. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is one of the top gynaecological problem affecting 12-18 percent of women in the reproductive age groups of 18-35. It is a complex endocrinal and metabolic disorder that affects the menstrual cycle, fertility, insulin production, circulatory system and appearance.

Ananda uses a traditional Ayurvedic process to balance the body from within. Through a detailed investigation of the past and present health patterns and family history, the physicians customise a treatment plan to restore balance in the disturbed glands. This is fortified with yogic postures and meditative practices working their way towards a healthy reproductive system. Healing emotional issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are a critical aspect of the treatment plan.

In the current pace of life, woman tend to succumb to constant pressure and show signs of early aging- the emotional strain of childbirth & parenthood, accompanied with active careers. Relationships and expectations to have it all send modern women down the road of aging sooner than nature intended. Both age and health are reflected in skin, bones, and joints. As the body's largest organ, skin is the first layer of defence from external factors, but often due to an unhealthy diet, hormonal changes, lack of sleep, environmental pollution, and addictions, its ability to work as an effective barrier is impaired.

The Renew programme using Ayurvedic, Oriental and International therapies works on building skin health and unlocks youthful essence through cleansing and nourishment. The program also helps improve musculoskeletal health and provides relief from muscle stiffness, rheumatism and arthritis. The Emotional healers at Ananda report that women in the age group of 40-55 show exceptional receptivity and willingness to unravel traumas and held-up negative life experiences, resulting in relief for aches and pains, wrinkles and dehydration in the tissues.

It’s ironic that one of life’s natural transitional phase has become a primary reason for emotional stress in women. Menopause refers to the period of time when a woman's hormone levels start to change. The production of estrogen and progesterone decreases, and it is the big drop in estrogen levels that causes most of the symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) though used widely to address menopause has several side effects. Studies using Acupuncture have shown that vasomotor symptoms (VMS), which include hot flashes and night sweats, declined significantly.

Ananda Rebalance programme applies traditional oriental therapies to address hormonal balance, specifically for menopause in women. This healing approach focuses on the blockage of energy flowing through the fourteen meridians. Intensive therapies are then used to balance its flow, relieve pain, improve energy flow, and vitalise systems intrinsically. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping therapy, moxibustion and therapeutic exercises with expert physiotherapists has proven to be an extremely successful route to dissolve the unpleasant experiences associated to menopause.
