The woman is considered to be “Shakti”; the Mother and Source of creation, in whose lap all of civilization is cradled. Every woman goes through a series of profound changes during her lifetime. Women’s life stages are based on the reproductive cycle, beginning with menstruation and ending with menopause .Each stage requires a different set of assessment, treatment and lifestyle changes.Ayurveda recognizes that each body is unique and by knowing one’s own prakruti (true nature), one can plan and practice an appropriate daily and seasonal dietetic and behavioral regime that will maintain balance of the doshas (vata, pitta and kapha).

Njavara Kizhi Ayurvedic Therapy – a new addition to the Ananda Spa menu

The Njavara is a variety of rice from the oryza family, which is cultivated in northern parts of Kerala in South India. The reference regarding this rice is seen in 2000-year old Sanskrit text books of Ayurveda where it is mentioned as a ‘Rasayana’, or that which clears the channels and promotes longevity. This medicinal rice variety has been protected in India under the Geographical Indications Act along with other similar products like Darjeeling tea and Malabar pepper.

Njavara rice has been used in traditional folk medicine as a supportive diet for health issues leading to malnourishment of body and to generally improve immunity. It is also used as an auspicious offering to gods in some temples of north Kerala. Njavara is cooked with sida decoction and milk and used externally to strengthen the body, improve immunity and nourish the skin.

Ananda re-introduces this age old traditional procedure that uses Njavara to the Ananda Renew package. The 55-minute Njavara Kizhi therapy involves massage using warm bundles made of Njavara rice cooked in milk and bala (sida cordifolia) decoction. This rice has a cooling effect even though it is applied warm over the body. This process is a known treatment for rheumatism, muscle/nervous de-generations, improving immunity and rejuvenating the largest organ in our body – the skin.

Pregnancy is a very special period in a woman’s life, one that requires tremendous care, attention and nourishment at physical, mental and emotional levels.

The Pranayama selected for pregnancy, are deeply soothing and relaxing in nature. These techniques allow one to switch off the mind, ensure harmonized distribution of prana in the body and stabilize the emotions as these abilities will be greatly needed in labor and delivery. This practice is also helpful in curbing pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH).
