Alongwith its geographical
proximity to the holy Indian towns of Rishikesh
and Haridwar, Ananda echoes with the royal persona
of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, a ruler in
whose times the palace precincts resounded with
the footsteps of political and spiritual personages.
His palace was also blessed with the divine
presence of Ma Anandamayi, a renowned propitiator
of universal love whose aura lingers in Ananda's
premises.
A legendary fount of religion and spirituality,
Narendra Nagar was chosen by Maharaja Narendra
Shah to house the Palace of Tehri Garhwal. In
the royal times, the regal corridors of the
palace echoed with footsteps of distinguished
guests like Late Sri. Lal Bahadur Shastri and
Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi - Prime Ministers of
India. Spiritual leaders like Ma Anandamayi
and Swami Sevanand as well as the last British
Viceroy of India - Lord Louis Mountbatten were
amongst the other reverd visitors to the palace.
In 1947, when India gained independence, the
kingdom of Tehri Garhwal was merged with the
state of Uttar Pradesh.
Now, home to Ananda, this royal precinct and
palace of the past is bestowed with renewed

A

journey; it is a yatra (pilgrimage). No pilgrimage
holds more importance than the one to Garhwal
and Kumaon, once known as Uttarakhand, the northern

It
is said that when gods left their footprints on
the land of Haridwar, metaphorically they also
left an indelible mark on the spiritual ethos
of every Hindu. More so the devout, who would
later follow their holy paths all across this
blessed land. Of such significance is Haridwar
that it has earned its sobriquet of honor, 'the
gateway to the gods’. Click
